    Modern Day Deliah was awesome!
I remember hearing it on the radio once. Once! Never again.
None of my friends in college had ever heard of the song either. Now here, finally, someone else heard that song. I'm not crazy. I heard it. I really heard it.

She'll cut you to the quick,
    stab you in the heart!
She'll love you like a lion
And leave you like a lamb!

Oh, I left out my worst: I'll go with Breakdance, Irene Cara. I put To All the Girls I've Loved Before as the number one song, because it is cheesy good. I can imitate both their voices singing that song all day long.

    1. Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now), Phil Collins (Yeah, I know ... I know ... )
    2. When Doves Cry, Prince (Couldn't turn the dial to get away from this one. And it still didn't get annoying.)
    3. The Reflex, Duran Duran (More of my bias here ... and it's my list, right?)
    4. The Longest Time, Billy Joel (Not bad for a cappella ... )
    5. You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want), Joe Jackson (Criminally underrated ... "Steppin' Out" was terrific, but this one got overlooked)
    6. The Heart Of Rock & Roll, Huey Lewis & The News (Huey in the '80s, Hootie in the '90s ... )
    7. Rock You Like A Hurricane, Scorpions (Those of you who have been to a hockey game in the ESA know)
    8. Borderline, Madonna (If we knew then what we do now ... )
    9. Magic, The Cars
    10. Time After Time, Cyndi Lauper (Should have done more atmospheric, reflective sort of tracks like this, Cyndi)
    11. Footloose, Kenny Loggins
    12. Sister Christian, Night Ranger (Just for you, BYH ... Just for you ... )
    13. Dancing In The Dark, Bruce Springsteen

    Pop filler ...
    14. It's A Miracle, Culture Club
    15. Almost Paradise, Mike Reno & Ann Wilson
    16. Let's Hear It For The Boy, Deniece Williams
    17. Oh Sherrie, Steve Perry
    18. Hello, Lionel Richie
    19. Jump (For My Love), Pointer Sisters
    20. Head Over Heels, Go-Go's

Craptastic Hall of Fame: To All The Girls I've Loved Before, Julio Iglesias & Willie Nelson
(As much as I wanted to give it to Chicago for its insane fall from outstanding music to complete crap, it couldn't overrule the above)

My list ... I went through the songs three times. The first seven I picked right away, spots 8-18 were on the next sortie, then there were about five or six additional songs that fought for the final two spots.

    1. Head Over Heels, Go Go's -- Great slice of power pop
    2. No More Words, Berlin -- A song I enjoyed then and enjoy even more now
    3. Sister Christian, Night Ranger -- My favorite song at that time, still think it's a great pop song
    4. Against All Odds, Phil Collins -- Without question, Collins' master opus. Great song.
    5. White Horse, Laid Back -- Kick ass and unique on the radio at the time (though rarely played). Kind of like Kraftwerk filtered through a whiskey barrel. Great tune.
    6. When Doves Cry, Prince -- The opening guitar blast from this song alone made me consider it for No. 1, but truthfully, once you get past that, it's pretty average by Prince standards. There's at least three or four songs on Purple Rain I like better.
    7. Run Runaway, Slade -- Mindless fun.
    8. Borderline, Madonna -- Song I like more now than I did then.
    9. Eyes Without A Face, Billy Idol -- Song I like more then than I do now, but it's Idol's best besides Dancing With Myself.
    10. My Ever Changing Moods, Style Council -- Would have hated it in '84, but I like it a lot now.
    11. Who's That Girl, Eurthymics -- Good groove to this song.
    12. Infatuation, Rod Stewart -- In '84, this would have been in my top 3. It's not that good, but definitely better than most of the other dreck Stewart put out from '82 onward. People Get Ready excepted.
    13. Stay The Night, Chicago -- As BYH mentioned, a good cheesy video accompanies a song that was "hard" among all their syrupy ballads.
    14. What's Love Got To Do With It, Tina Turner -- An undeniably great song, though overplayed to the point where I don't have as much fondness for it as I probably should.
    15. Dance Hall Days, Wang Chung -- Decent tune.
    16. Oh Sherrie, Steve Perry -- I had a crush on the chick in the video, which is cathartic, because otherwise I'd think my tolerance for this song might make put my sexual orientation into question.
    17. I'll Wait, Van Halen -- Low-key, Eddie Van Halen dicking around on the keyboard filler, but not a bad song. Still better than most Van Hagar songs.
    18. Love Will Show Us How, Christine McVie -- A forgotten song that shouldn't be. McVie's solo turn was pleasant (and she got played a lot on Milwaukee radio, so I heard a ton of it).
    19. Rock You Like A Hurricane, Scorpions -- Didn't really like it then, don't revere it now, but it is an all-time Big Dumb Rock Song.
    20. Dancing In The Dark, Bruce Springsteen -- Bruce is overrated and so is this song. I considered not ranking it at all, but if I'm truthful with myself, it's better than the songs it beat out for the 20th spot (Heart Of Rock 'n Roll, Magic).

Worst: I'm not picking To All The Girls ... deserving though it may be. To me it's an anomaly that it made the chart at all, probably fueled by record company payola. It's not as if it was a pop radio or MTV staple.

That leaves Almost Paradise, Obscene Phone Caller, Holding Out For A Hero and Hold Me Now on my short list. Holding Out For A Hero is out because its uber-cheesiness puts it in so bad it's good territory. Hold Me Now is out because my hate for the Thompson Twins isn't a good enough reason.

My initial instinct was to go with the sappy Almost Paradise, but then I Youtubed Obscene Phone Caller and it was a no-brainer.

Factor in the fact that it's a terrible song, it has a terribly hilarious video, the "artist" only has a record contract because he was Berry Gordy's son and Michael Jackson's buddy, plus given all of that, having the temerity to call himself Rockwell, and well, Obscene Phone Caller is the worst.

We are, we are, we are we're just children
    Finding our way around indecision.
We are, we are, we are all but helpless
    Take this forever,
    Whisper to a scream.

    1 Sister Christian, Night Ranger
2 Run Runaway, Slade - See chameleon lying in the sun!!!!
3 Whisper To A Scream (Birds Fly), Icicle Works - I have the album somewhere
4 My Ever Changing Moods, Style Council - I have a cassette somewhere
5 Dancing In The Dark, Bruce Springsteen - Bad Bruce still rates high
6 What Is Love, Howard Jones - My first concert
7 The Ghost In You, Psychedelic Furs - Great band from the 80s
    8 Oh Sherrie, Steve Perry
9 Borderline, Madonna - Her best song
    10. Magic, Cars - Uh-oh it's magic
    11. Head Over Heels, Go-Go's
11 Hold Me Now, Thompson Twins
12 You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want), Joe Jackson
    13 No More Words, Berlin
14 When Doves Cry, Prince (second week in chart)
15 Bob Marley & The Wailers One Love / People Get Ready
16 Ultravox Dancing With Tears in My Eyes
17 Frankie Goes to Hollywood Relax
    18 Rufus & Chaka Khan Ain't Nobody
19 New Order Thieves Like Us
    20 Duran Duran The Reflex

So much crap on that list, but Lionel singing to the blind girl in Hello has to be the worst.
