    Brian,

    If you are not willing to degrade yourself, you have no future in this business.

    Seriously, I would not be looking to the Cardinals to gain your foothold. Look to high schools or small colleges, etc.

    Call/email the local papers and let them know you are available. They will want to know that you have experience and can work quickly on deadline and send a story within a tight deadline, though.

    So you might want to get some practice or clips.

    You can't just call the sports editors in May and wait. You have to keep checking in and getting your name out there.

    Hate to say the forbidden word "blog" -- and for all I know this is silly advice -- but you can "cover" games and do write-ups for a blog you create (it's pretty much free to do so) that no one will probably read except you and the editor you send a link to that would show you had the story up reasonably soon after the game ended.
