The Rescue of the Chilean Miners

One of the miners has said he will work to improve mine safety to ensure that nothing like this happens again. Frankly, I think mine managers will spend more on developing rescue equipment and procedures than safety equipment. We get one of these a year it seems and nothing gets better.

The miners were courageous. The rescuers were heroic & innovative. The President was bold and determined.

And the pictures were incredible.

There was raw emotion on display.

And the miners were charismatic, from the stoic shift manager, to the playboy with a wife & a girlfriend, to the rock star Sepulveda who came up second and led the crowd in cheers.

They even offered up good quotes like, "there were 34 of us because God never left our side," and "I met God and I met the Devil, and God won."

Wit the passing of time, I don't even remember that many details surrounding the WV incident. I don't think I'll ever forget this.

Smash is also right in that, because all 33 survived, this was purely a joyous story. You didn't need to temper your joy with the sadness that one or more of the miners had died.

Pretty cool story. I hope he does well, and/or is at least able to finish:

“What I thought about as I ran in the mine was that I was going to beat destiny,” Peña said through an interpreter Thursday at a news conference. “I was going to turn the tables on destiny. That I was saying to that mine, ‘I can outrun you, I’m going to run until you’re just tired and bored of me,’ and I did it.”

Pena, 34, was the 12th miner of 33 rescued on the morning of Oct. 13, emerging into the klieg lights of international celebrity.

The New York Road Runners, which directs the marathon, immediately invited Peña to be its guest for the 41st running of the race.

“We said we want to celebrate this man,” said Mary Wittenberg, the president of the Road Runners. “He’s one of us.”

She never thought he would run.

“We were thinking V.I.P. guest, have a nice breakfast, sit inside a warm tent, maybe drive the course in a car,” Wittenberg said.

But Peña is a man who ran by the light of his miner lamp. He ran to overcome his fears of death, and once he did, running the streets of New York seemed less of a challenge.

“I wanted to show the world I can run it, and that, yes, we can,” he said. “When I ran in the darkness, I was running for life.”

Pena is back to run again this year:

The darling of last year’s New York City Marathon, Edison Peña, was back in the spotlight Thursday in Central Park, but this time he did not display a radiant presence, made no bold statements and declined to impersonate Elvis Presley.

Last year, Peña captivated spectators while completing the marathon just three and a half weeks after being freed from a mine in Chile. He and 32 others were trapped for 69 days. He achieved acclaim as the camera-loving miner, visiting the Empire State Building and appearing on the “Late Show With David Letterman.” He also crooned Elvis songs.

In the year since, Peña and many of the other miners have faced struggles after the worldwide attention faded following their dramatic rescue. On Sunday, Peña will compete in the marathon again, but there was a contrast between the Peña who toured New York last year and the Peña who spoke to reporters Thursday.

Peña, 35, did not come to grips with the traumatic nature of his time underground until after last year’s marathon. He turned to drinking and drugs and checked into a psychiatric clinic, which he described as the low point since being freed from the mine.

“I’m here despite the fact that I’ve fallen down to show that I’ve risen up,” Peña said through an interpreter at a news conference Thursday afternoon. “I don’t really want to go into depth about the challenges that I faced, but suffice to say, I have gotten help and declared a truce with the problems I’ve had.”
