And since they barely even bother anymore to hide left-leaning political agendas. I never had any doubt, getting into this business a couple decades ago, that newsrooms were populated with liberals; it's the nature of the work, the so-called "calling," and so on. But as long as there was a pretense of objectivity, it seemed like it could work. Now, from news budgets to display of stories to squeaky wheels in the community regularly getting greased to the tone and slant of the writing, the daily newspaper has gotten in the grills of many traditional readers to the point of being expendable. And the non-traditional readers, er, that's just an oxymoron.

Again and again and again, in a hundred ways, newspapers alienate the customers they do have and chase after the customers they don't have and probably never will get.

If the PD hired an Asian woman as a columnist, would the diversity be applauded? Don't think so.

From a West Coast perspective, it sure was surprising that the new executive editor, Susan Goldberg ---- who bailed out of San Jose ---- would make Pluto her first notable hire. In the Bay Area, she twisted herself into knots for the sake of diversity, making some good hires and some terrible ones. Maybe this hire was made by the Plain Dealer's publisher. That could explain a lot if the publisher has been a Pluto fan for 20 years.
