He played for a 5, he made 5. The only shot he would have questioned had he not was the yanked wedge.

He left the door open. It's like the prevent defense. Only in this case, the other team wasn't able to march down the field. He played for a 5, which gave Sergio a chance. Play for 4 and Sergio has no chance. You play to win, not to hope the other world-class professional doesn't do well.

Not with the 18th at Carnoustie. Play for a 4 and you might make 6, which means Sergio only has to make par.
Play for the five and Sergio has to make birdie, at the same time taking the kind of risks that often result in a 6 or 7.
Harrington makes 5 and Sergio birdies they go to another hole.
Harrington makes six - or worse - and Sergio birdies (or even pars) and its game over
