    Some people derive great joy from singers, actors, writers, etc. They can be hurt by that person's death.

    Because you don't feel that way doesn't mean others don't.

    I don't think there's any doubt Elvis' death was bigger. As someone else said, he was still pretty relevant. MJ was a huge worldwide star, but he had become a national joke (and I won't mention the widely held belief that he was a child molester).

    Question - was Elvis the first real big celebrity death?
    I'm not talking about JFK or people who were actually important, but it seems like Elvis was one of the first big celebrities that everyone makes a big deal out of.
    I'm guessing a lot of that has to do with Elvis coming out at the same time as TV got big.

    James Dean died in 1955, Buddy Holly in 1959.

    Right. Not sure the national attention that Dean got, but Holly was big. I was born much later than either of those dates.

    Rudolf (sp?) Valentino was way before Buddy Holly.
