I've read the ones that aren't hagiographic.

Ford held out for a role in the administration on par with being "co-president," ambitious and steadfast. When that didn't come, Ford declined. It's not like Reagan just kicked him to the curb.

  2. Alas, Chris, I covered that campaign. The idea was very serious for about six hours. Ex post facto, the Reagan people have crawfished a little bit about it, but the prospect was very much alive until Ford's people began, ah, re-configuring the job of VP, largely around what we have come to know as the Cheney Model these days. But to say he didn't consider Ford seriously is not at all accurate. And GHWB, at that time, was no more or less conservative than Ford was. (He ran against Reagan in the 1980 primaries from what was left of the Republican moderate side.)

  3. Buck - you just pointed out that Bush is doing the exact same thing for Ford that he did for Reagan. The exact same thing.

Are you naive enough to think those "vacations" in Crawford aren't working vacations?

I'm done with this argument. I said my peace.

Go BC - Beat Navy (by more than 7 points please!)

  4. Three working vacations:
    1) "bin Laden Determined To Strike In US,"
    2) Katrina
    3) Gerry Ford's sendoff.

Don't wake him up. He might start being president again.

At least we agree on something, though I sense a mail-it-in, stamp's-already-on-the-envelope BC outing is on tap.

(And Paul Johnson would've been a great choice as BC coach, but I digress.)

  7. Is that a sequitur?
    Non!

You're smart enough. You certainly seem to have all the answers. Why not take a crack at it?

  9. Gee, there's a snapper.
Right out of the "They never played the game" handbook.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need a haircut.

  12. Have fun.
But don't criticize the barber unless you're willing to step in yourself.

    Liar.
