    so was losing the SE a layoff or a firing? Because I figure a new guy couldn't have been hurting them that badly financially. Plus, eventually all papers need an SE.

    It was a layoff. There are a couple of other guys on staff who have served as sports editor before, so I'm assuming they'll take over the duties.

    what's rough is that the dude just moved up there from page designer/copy editor, if I recall ... probably would have been safe if he was still in the job he held less than a year ago.

    and, on an entirely selfish note, glad now I didn't get the job.
