The Des Moines Register seeking entry-level reporter

The Des Moines Register Media is looking for an entry-level lifestyles and entertainment reporter for Juice, our free weekly tabloid aimed at young professionals aged 25-34 in Central Iowa.

You will join a staff that engages with its community, uses social media as a reporting and communication tool, and considers itself the authority on entertainment and life in Central Iowa.

This reporter will find and tell lifestyles and entertainment stories on topics that include dining, nightlife, events, careers and networking — with the opportunity for deeper enterprise on more serious trends and topics of interest to the region’s young professional community. This position will also have the opportunity to write stories for The Des Moines Register. We’re looking for a creative, energetic reporter who consistently produces story ideas, writes with a strong features voice, can work both independently and collaboratively with a team, and is committed to quality, accurate journalism.

The ideal candidate will have a journalism background and experience in a professional newsroom. Must be proficient in social media and understand how these tools can be used to interact and connect our publication with our young professional audience. Knowledge of video and multimedia tools a plus.

How many self-references to your own Twitter and Facebook stories can you use in your work?

It seems as if this is tailored to a demographic that doesn't read a printed product.

 

I've never been to Des Moines, but at the paper I am at, we had a similar sort of publication for a while. Before too long it went to online only, then the editor took a job elsewhere. After that, the 'staff' assigned to it eventually was slimmed down to one person, who was later laid off... sounds familiar I'm sure.

 

It was a good publication ... back in 2004. It's stale now.

I'll be shocked if The Register fills this position. It's the king of posting openings and never filling them. Last summer The Register had an opening for a web reporter covering recruiting for Iowa and a college sports editor. After making offers, which were turned down, the openings were rescinded.

We all know the economy right now, but be damn sure you can fill an opening before you post it.
