DOT has come out with the death stats for 2006. Almost 18,000 drunk driving deaths in the US last year. To put that number into perspective, it is the equivalent of losing 35 elementary schools or 100 plane crashes. It's a number that I can't fathom and I have just as tough a time understanding that 39,000 people in total died on the roads last year.

As well, 2.5 million people were injured in car crashes in 2006, almost 1 percent of the population.
