I'd love to see the Stars play outdoors in the Cotton Bowl on New Years Day.

It's not like any other game is being played there that day anymore.

You really think Jerrah! would let that happen?

Cotton Bowl filled on New Year's Day

The Big Ten and Big 12 are starting the Dallas Football Classic there in 2011.

Actually there will be a new bowl game at the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1 starting this season. The Dallas Football Classic was certified along with the Bronx Bowl last month.

But yeah, a Stars game at the Cotton Bowl would be cool as hell. Of course Dallas hasn't had a below freezing New Year's Day in about 15 years.

Maybe they could do it at JerryWorld with the roof and end zone panels open.

Crosby and Ovechkin are great players, yes, but they can reach more casual fans by bringing in teams from markets that maybe aren't included rather than going back to the same stars again and again — and soon it will be like the NBA of the 1980s where you knew about the guys they marketed, Jordan, Bird, Magic, Thomas, etc. and not much else.

Say Columbus is the game, I think Rick Nash has every bit of the creativity of an Ovechkin and he's very personable as well. Maybe fans would pay to see Stamkos. Perhaps people will get a glimpse of the young, rough and tumble teams like the two finalists this year or L.A. and like the game rather than a few stars.

I don't think those stars again and again necessarily work, spread the novelty around.

No, Ovechkin is the most exciting player to play hockey since...

Damn, how far back does that statement go? Not saying better, but exciting.

Ovi seems to be a lot like a young Jagr but twice as tough and ten times as batshit crazy.

Casual fans won't ever pay too much attention to non-playoff teams from a particular sport. Any team that didn't make the playoffs can pretty much be written off for an event like the Winter Classic. If you have to educate casual fans about who players like Nash and Stamkos are, the game is a dud before the puck has already dropped. And it certainly wouldn't generate near the ad revenue or ESPN coverage this Crosby-Ovechkin matchup would.

The NBA showcases the Lakers, Celtics, LeBron and some other team -- last year I think it was the Magic -- every Christmas, no exception.

The NFL showcases the Lions -- Lions! -- Cowboys and four other teams every Thanksgiving. And the Patriots are about to play their third Thanksgiving Day game since 2000, which is no surprise given how some teams like the Patriots, Dolphins and Broncos seem to make more holiday appearances than most.

Given that context, is it really so bad having the Pens or Caps making a Winter Classic appearance once every four years?

For the most part I do agree with you RC, except that his year's Cup finalists were in the last two Outdoor Classics.

The NHL is like the heroin addict looking for that one great fix but has run out of veins ...

And he looks down and sees that one last throbbing blue one between his legs ...
