    Early success isn't the greatest indicator of long-term success.

    Ralph Branca had 76 wins at age 25.

    He retired at age 30, having collected his 88th and final win two years earlier.

    A back injury had more to do with Branca's early exit. Fifty years of medical advances might have had Branca back on the mound in relatively quick order.

    No guarantee he'd win 300 by any stretch, and since he was (and is, unless a news story is developing without my knowledge) a righty, his longevity leash wouldn't be as long.

    Doc Gooden had 100 wins at age 24, 150 at age 28. Finished with 194

    Ah, what could have been.
