I'm gettin' hungry with all this talk of trotlining, pork and beans, and chicken.

Where's the love? Let's not end our Howlin' Wolf/Willie Dixon honeymoon.

I'm a huge fan of his dad, but Jr. just comes off as a goofball. Maybe it's the overexposure of his MNF persona that has skewed my perception. Point me to some of his lesser-known stuff. I'd be happy to check it out.

Why not go a little farther back in the blues, say:

You don't miss your jelly until your jelly roller's gone

That just means she's old. (ducking)

  7. I am a suburban intellectual-ish guy from nowhere near the South, and I have started to like George Strait. Is this allowed?

I can see that. The song he butchered for MNF is one of my favorites of his. It's well-known, obviously, but it certainly fits this thread ...

"I got ketchup on my blue jeans, I just burnt my hand.
Lord, its hard to be a bachelor man.
I got girls that can cook, I got girls that can clean,
I got girls that can do anything in between.
I got to get ready, make everything right,
'cause all my rowdy friends are coming over tonight.

Do you want a drink? Hey do you want to party?
Hey honey this is ole Hank. Ready to get the thing started.
We cooked the pig in the ground, got some beer on ice
and all my rowdy friends are coming over tonight."

Man. Barbecued hog. Few things, if any, are better.

The catfish reference reminds me of:

    Well, I wish I was a catfish
Swimmin' in the deep blue sea
I have all you pretty women
    Fishin' after me

Hmm. Depends on what George Strait. Legions of Southerners worship him, but I've never liked him too much. However, his older stuff - All My Exes Live in Texas, Amarillo By Morning, Oceanfront Property - that stuff's pretty good. He had one a couple years back that's good called "Seashores of Old Mexico," I think.

But, generally, my rule is nothing post-1985 that's not certain Dwight Yoakam and John Anderson. Country music, for the most part, has been total crap for the past 20 years. Garth Brooks is a large part of this. Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts. Oh my gosh. I'm getting sick thinking about it.

The newer country acts who are good are not mainstream, Nashville pop. Elizabeth Cook is heavenly and I wish I could marry her. There are plenty of outsider country acts still making "outlaw" country, which is the best brand, in my opinion.

And that reminds me of this. A little TVZ. No food reference, but this thread has transcended that. :)

Down at the bottom of that dirty ol' river
down where the reeds and the catfish play
there lies a dream as soft as the water
there lies a bluebird that's flown away

Well, to meet is like springtime
and to love's like the summer
her brown eyes shone for nobody but me
then autumn forever, the fool come a fallin'
and the rain turned to freezin' inside of me.

I'll kindle my fires with the words
    I can't send you
and the roads I can't follow
and the songs I can't sing

    Well, all you young ladies
    who dream of tomorrow
    while you're a listenin'
    these words will I say
Cling to today with its joy
    and its sorrow
    you'll need all your memories
    when youth melts away.

    Well, the angel of springtime
    he rides down the southwind
    the angel of summer
    he does just the same
    the angel of autumn
    she's blue and she's golden
    and the angel of winter
    won't remember your name

Down at the bottom of that dirty ol' river
down where the reeds and the catfish play
there lies a dream as soft as the water
there lies a bluebird that's flown away

    There lies a bluebird
    that's flown away
