Nitpick: The first isn't advice as much as a proverb. The second is a command.

Not wanting to throw a wet blanket, but, from my incredibly wise father:

    "Go to the Funeral"

As I've gotten older, it's resonated far more deeply in my life. There's not much more uncomfortable than attending a visitation, wake, funeral, etc.. There's nothing you can say to the person who's experienced the loss, they're just a horrible thing to be at.

Yet as I've begun to grow older & experience significant loss in my own life, having someone simply BE there, means the world.

From my junkie (now clean for 35-plus years) Cousin: "If you ever do anything stronger than weed I'll kick your ass."

From my dad, after his relationship with my older brother (since repaired) was severely strained by several years of arguments over long hair, rock music, etc: "Pick your battles more smartly than I did."

From my mom, when I was contemplating turning down my first newspaper job, 2,000 miles from home in the most remote state in the lower 48: "Try it for a year. If you don't like it, you can always leave."

From the city editor at my first paper: "Always cover your ass. Attribute."
