The first 2:45 is a continous take that introduces almost every main character. Nearly impossible to film.

Anderson sets up Diggler's moment of clarity, but you are always expecting one of those firecrackers to be a gunshot blowing out the nack of his head. Amazing tension.

    Another extended shot.

If you ever rewatch the movie, the background music (chosen by the great Michael "No Myth" Penn) explains what is happening in the scene.

But if there was ever a movie that is not for everyone, BN is it.

I thought this thread was about Bo Derek losing a hand in a horrendous combine accident of some sort.

How many times in the movie do they say you never see it coming.

That was the ending in the book. It's no country for old men, you see.

So it's hard to hate the ending if you went to the movie after reading the book.

Never read the book, but I understand how people love it. I just didn't.

Just like Boogie Nights, I will say why I like something, but if you don't agree, no biggie.

There is not one thing that everyone likes.

My copy of Boogie Nights must have had the gusher scene cut out of it.

There are two places PTA could've done a cut in that take. One where Luis Guzman has his back to camera welcoming Burt and Julianne. The second where Rollergirl has her back to the camera when Burt and Julianne are at the table.

It's an old technique from cinema verite, where you use someone's body or a piece of furniture or architecture that's way, way in the foreground as an edit point. You use the blackness filling the screen as a point to stop and reload. Old trick, but still effective.
