Since it's hard to pick either '93 or '94, I'll go with '89. You could tell that my musical taste would end up being all over the map, but I stick to alternative and rap:

    Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane
    Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus
    Janet Jackson - Rythym Nation
    The Cure - Love Song
    Tom Petty - Free Fallin'
Pictures of Matchstick Men - Camper Von Beetoven
    Roam - B-52s
Girl like you - The Smithereens
Me, Myself and I - De La Soul
    Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
Head like a hole - NIN
    Debaser - The Pixies
Here comes your man - The Pixies
    Like a Prayer - Madonna
    Patience - Gunners
Rockin' In the free world - Neil Young
Bust a Move - Young MC
    18 & Live - Skid Row
Love in an elevator - Aerosmith
    Express yourself - Madonna
Wind beneath my winds -- Bette Midler [/ducking]
    Paradise City -- Gunners
So Alive -- Love & Rockets
What I am -- Edie Brickell
    Smooth Criminal - Michael Jackson
In your room - The Bangles
Angel Eyes - Jeff Healey Band
When the children cry - White Lion
I'll be there for you -- Bon Jovi
    Toy Soldier - Martika
    Dressed for success -- Roxette

Hence why he said they were still going strong in 1992. Am I missing something?

That's the problem with this question. It's tough to pin down one year. Is it by release date, or the year it was popular (see the above with UYI and Ten. Most of the hits came from the following year).

For me that year would probably be 1994, but there may only be three or four albums/songs released that year that hold a meaning for me. But it was a time that an ex exposed me to a lot of different artists that I still listen to today, but wouldn't have known otherwise. It was the year I saw Pink Floyd while working at the Vet and really started to get into their music. The Division Bell was released that year, but it was also the year I discovered all of Dark Side and the Wall, etc and not just the songs played on the radio.

1984, the cultural apex of that decade. And the best year of my life other than the one I first saw a woman naked.

    My thread, your rules.

    More arguments that way. ;)

But, if we have to draw a line somewhere and I am forced to make a ruling, I'll go with what I had in mind when I started the thread: Songs are limited to the year in which they were released. Or, they had to chart in that year. Otherwise, you could pick 1994 and include "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones because you heard it on the radio that year.
