    I'll agree that the real harm of social media is in the importance some place on it.

    I'm not sure the extremist fringes of Facebook are any more damaging to society than any others. In fact, the whole notion of "hashtag activism" indicates the opposite - meaning the lunacy rarely bleeds into real life in legitimately harmful ways. Or, at least, there's no reason it has to.
