Texas reinstates activities; Bama still screwed up

Apparently the swine flu might be a serious deal.

Texas' UIL just suspended all high school interscholastic activities until May 11, canceling all Regional track meets and making it so baseball and softball playoffs will extend into mid-June.

    Insane.

I guarantee that if this had happened in the fall, it'd be a different story. "Cancel football because of a little flu bug?"

What's so weird about baseball and softball in mid-June? [/indianahighschoolsports]

Or there's Option B: Panic fed by the breathless reporting of broadcast TV.

You evidently haven't seen how our local TV stations — at least, the two at the bottom of the Nielsens and the classy scale (you think those two are related, maybe?) — are reporting this story. It's like Stephen King's Captain Tripps come to life.

EDIT: Good God. I put a parenthetical clause inside an em-dash clause. I apologize.

So, are they going to shut down schools until May 11th as well?

Because it's a wee bit more likely to spread a virus in an 8 hour school day with more people in an enclosed space than in a 2 hour baseball game held al fresco.

Always good to see our leaders panic into an absurd decision.

These kids probably have a better chance of getting hurt in a crash while riding the bus than catching the flu in a non-contact outdoor sport.

I think it is different, though.

The only reason I can think that this was recommended is because they don't want some infected kid from South Texas suddenly hanging out with kids from the Metroplex, the Panhandle, West Texas and El Paso and suddenly it is spreading like wildfire throughout the state.

Maybe if they suspend stuff for a while they can keep it relatively located to one portion of the state.

    That would be my assumption.

I would not want to be a prep sports writer in Texas right now. You could probably bust a few features out on the suspension of sports, but after that and if this thing continues to get worse, you're looking at a world of pain.

As in higher ups say "There's no prep sports, let's lay him/her off."

DMN suits are saying: "See, we told you we didn't need those prep writers. We are soooooo smart."
