He didn't exactly go to Australia, he was living in Vanuatu, an island in the South Pacific. He had to fly through Sydney to get to LA, which is where he was arrested.

(First guy I dated in Australia took me to Vanuatu once -- it was beyond lavish. This is the same guy who asked me for petrol money after our first date, so his cheapness did improve. (crossthreading with all the dating threads).)
