    I think your approach sounds fine, although both the porn references and particularly the "hope you never interview a serial killer" are pretty funny.

    this is cracking me up...

    but on a serious note...while you want to make your subject comfortable, you also want them to know what they're saying is on the record. I've seen situations where interviewees got too comfortable and ended up regretting what ended up in print the next day. Yes, it's building relationships and getting to the heart of the story, but you also need to be somewhat aware of burning bridges.

    That said...it sounds like you've done a great job with this, and a great way to introduce yourself to a new beat. Just watch your words carefully when you do your volleyball preview :)
