With Ryan stepping down, Jocketty is now second-longest.

Not necessarily. The Twins start their last homestand on Friday. It's the chance for a big farewell.

The pending free agent situation might have the greatest link -- especially after the crop of free agents brought in the past two seasons.

IMHO: Ryan's last offer to Torii (45 million?) was his last and best under Pohlad's terms. When Torii shot that down, there wasn't much point.

Ryan's saying it ain't on him. And after how many years laboring with the old man's ridiculous budget, I don't blame him.

Odd fact: This is 13 years to the day since he was promoted ...

A quite-possibly flawed list of the 10 longest-tenured GMs, according to a quick count off the baseball america site (which, by the way isn't completely up-to-date; let me know if I missed one and I'll update my post)

    1. John Scheurholz, Braves, hired 10/10/1990
    2. Walt Jocketty, Cardinals, hired 10/14/1994
    3. Kevin Towers, Padres, 11/17/1995
    4. Brian Sabean, Giants, 9/30/1996
    5. Billy Beane, A's, 10/17/1997
    6. Brian Cashman, Yankees 2/3/1998
    7. Dan O'Dowd, Rockies, 9/20/1999
    8. Ken Williams, White Sox, 10/24/2000
    9. Mark Shapiro, Indians, 11/1/2001
    10. Jim Hencry, Cubs, 7/4/202

Edit: Earlier version was done in a semi hurry. Checked team websites with this one ...
Another edit: Next time I'm leaving goddamned baseball research to buckw, since I've now established myself as an amateur ...

I can picture him wearing a gray road jersey in Flushing, Queens.

Wade's gone, thank God. Not that Gillick has been much better.

  11. And didn't Littlefield just get fired?
