That means, by definition, it's not an epidemic.

Epidemic means "far and beyond" what is normally expected.

Chronic problem, yes. But that's about it.

Its February sweeps. When every local television newscast "uncovers" a "shocking" story that has been under their nose forever to scare the crap out parents of school-age children.

I'd say a liquor store that routinely sells alcohol to kids as young as 14 is a story.

The station is owned by Gannett and in either third or fourth place in the market routinely.

Information you all should probably know.

    Carry on ...

  6. THIS .... Is the story.

And where is Holly Rowe when she is really needed?

  7. Good for the kids.

Thank God WUSA wasn't in Austin in '76.

When I was in college, I used to go to the package store near the campus to buy liquor, and I never got carded .... until the day I turned 21. The clerk gave me a bit of a hairy eyeball, then laughed and said, "guess it's your lucky day. Happy birthday."

So who else has had editors jump up and down after seeing one of these stories on TV during sweeps and want to follow up on it? Jeez, I've had to make some calls on these and it never fails.
Q: So is this a big deal? Part of a new push by your agency? What's behind the crackdown?
A: We're just doing what we've always been doing. The TV people just needed a story I guess.

Of course, we've ended up following them, because we don't want our subscribers to think we don't know what's going on in our neck of the woods and they'd be better off just watching TV for the four or five times a year they venture out of the metro area.

Which makes it perfectly ok for these kids to harass the reporter's kids.

I don't see why you'd draw that parallel.
