Don't want all of Hazel Park to burn away. As much as it's one of the per capita leaders in mullets, kids with rat tails and wife beater t-shirts, the best Thai restaurant in the Detroit area, Pi's, is there. A complete hole in the wall carry-out joint but the food is rockin'.

Yeah, I keep meaning to get to that place. Heard good things about it.

In all seriousness, having driven that stretch, that would be a nightmarish stretch of interstate to have shut down for a lengthy period of time.

Well, it's going to be shut down for a lengthy period of time. They don't fix anything quick around here.

It's probably the main commuting aorta for the entire metro area. Commuting is going to be utterly fucked up for months.

Not familiar with Detroit, but they said something like 10 miles from downtown. That's the metro area, at least.
If Detroit is the asshole of America, this would be the taint.

Mustang, for this to be "Detroit Meltdown Thread: the city is actually on fire now", the city has to be on fire. This ain't in the city.

    Moran.

Commuting IS going to be screwed.
Before I moved to this city (and lived in southeast Michigan, which is how I know THIS FIRE ISN'T IN DETROIT), the area I;m in now had a tanker fire at the main intersection of town. Car cut off a tanker, which flipped and burned on the north-south freeway under the east-west freeway. (might be reversed).
Anyway, the state DOT kicked out the contract, paid bonuses to the contractor and got it fixed quickly.

I'd still like to know how this all started.,.

Quite familiar with Detroit. It's metro area, but not in Detroit. Yonkers, St. Louis Park, East Chicago, Arilington, the other Arlington....
    Thread title is wrong.

Thank you Slappy. My grandmother lived 4-5 miles from here, and there are roughly three cities between this and there. She lived in Troy. This is closer to Royal Oak (where I was born) than it is to Detroit.

This is less than two miles from my house - we could see the smoke from our front porch. The flames were unbelievable in person - I'm amazed the gas station didn't go up with the tanker.
