Tampa Bay Times layoffs

    That "downtown edition" sounds more like tbt*, the free daily tabloid that shifted to 1x a week at least a year ago.
    I enjoyed tbt*. They should have kept tbt* and Sunday and ditched the traditional M-S daily. But that's hardly the first -- or 1,000th -- time I've disagreed with a decision that place made.

    A 50-year-old sports editor was probably a 16-year-old high school sports nerd. And when he became editor he printed what he was interested in. And since it was so difficult to figure out what readers actually did read the sports editor printed whatever he was interested in. Which was frequently what the editor had been interested in high school.

    And it really did not matter what the sports editor printed. Because the paper had a local monopoly and was making a ton of money no matter what the story selection was.
