The Times hides behind a pay wall which doesn’t help matters
I am surprised how many Tampa HS football games they cover

Editors are essential. The number needed is debatable. But editors are essential to getting out a product, online or in print. You don't get quality journalism without a quality editor involved. I don't know what the ratio of editors to content producers is in Tampa, but a lot of newsrooms have already cut the fat there.

And to be fair, a lot of people labeled as editors produce content in different forms for a lot of newsrooms, even if their names aren't on it. Slideshows are a prime example, and those drive a lot of traffic. And done well, they can actually be good journalism.

    Great!

    So, remember you said:

You should buy a subscription, if you haven't yet, and support the paper.

Oof. Of course, they'll set ad targets low enough so all the reps can get their commissions. Because "we wouldn't have jobs if there weren't ads to support news." (Or the corollary we always used, "Without news, you'd be working for a shopper.")

According to this report the Times carries 103 million dollars of liens. 32 million of the liens are to the IRS for pension liabilities. McClatchy was driven into Chapter 11 by pension liabilities. The Times has got to be very close to Chapter 11.

Doesn't Gannett own most of the surrounding papers?

$32M lien placed on Tampa Bay Times over pension payment defaults

The Gannett/Gatehouse papers in Florida include Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Lakeland, Sarasota, Daytona Beach and Fort Myers
Sounds like the Times staffers got a week’s furlough, too
