BTW: Can this possibly be true:

    That's hard to believe.

It's true. They spent at least that much in 2009, according to an AP investigation of DoD budgets and documents -- hearts and minds, home and abroad. That $4.7 billion was almost as much as the DoD spent on body armor for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2004 and 2006.

In what possible way does the phrase "friends with the people they cover" connect to the OpEd you posted about trying to keep CNN's Iraqi staff members from being abducted and tortured and killed?

    Here's the irony...

Taibbi has "pulled the trigger" with so many articles instead of knowing when to sit, it gives his haters all the excuses in the world to blow this one off.

Great article. Too bad the many useless screeds that preceded it will make people ignore.

Please tell me that you're not going to defend CNN while bashing Logan.

Did you notice who wrote the OpEd? It received a lot of attention when first published. The author is the former Chief News Executive for CNN.

Sure his spin is that it was done to protect his employees. (Though at least one was tortured.)

But he reveals the true reasons himself in the first line:

"Over the last dozen years I made 13 trips to Baghdad to lobby the government to keep CNN's Baghdad bureau open and to arrange interviews with Iraqi leaders."

What's the point of having a bureau if you're not going to report the news and your employees are still at risk of being kidnapped & tortured?

It was about access, prestige, exclusivity.

They kissed the ass of a murderous, torturous dictator to have a bureau.

What Logan is advocating is stupid.

What CNN did immoral, deceitful, and scandalous.

So why does CNN retain any credibility?

Agree completely. He's a bit of a journalism tragedy to me. Guy is smart, clever, funny and willing to ask questions. But his tone can make it difficult to take him seriously.

Surprised that Taibi did not mention Logan while in Iraq got had affair with married state dept contractor and also got pregnant. Now that is friendship !

That's crazy. I remember when Giuliani went nuts about the size of the NYPD's public information bureau (and the fact that the Police Commissioner ended up on the cover of Time instead of him).

This operation dwarfs that by a multiplier of 100 or more.

It doesn't seem like we're getting much bang for our buck.

You've almost got to hope that they're hiding other stuff in that budget.

    Where did I bash Logan?

You've never worked as a journalist, have you?

So you're excusing both of them?

I'm just assuming you were critical of her. My bad if you agree with her.

And, I've made it clear numerous times that I've never been a journalist.

Just like most on this board never played sports at a high level.

Why should I be any less able to comment on journalists than journalists are able to comment on athletes?

I'm not excusing anyone of anything.

I'm weighing on your completely spurious comparison.

    So, there's no comparison?

CNN just did what they did to save lives? Is that what you think?

Or instead of playing some game of cat and mouse so that you can just be critical of everything I post, why don't you just write what you think?

Then we can have an actual debate.
