  1. Related to the Spurrier thread on the journo board ...

  2. The day he was booted from the team lots of rumors of point shaving erupted about him too. However, I saw a Las Vegas blogger go game by game with a couple of casino sharps to disprove the rumors. It is telling about Garcia's character that the rumors arose so quickly though.

Nice. He should have gotten a smile and hearty handshake for this.

No kidding. Isn't that why you play college football?

Really doubt the shaving shit. If he was going out there high, of course he's eligible to play like crap.

I know a guy who knows a guy who's was a good friend of Spurrier's in college. (yes, it's fourth-hand, but we deal in that all the time on this board). He said the reason Spurrier gave Garcia so many chances is that Garcia reminded him of a young Spurrier at Florida in the mid-60s. Course back then coaches didn't give a rat's ass if you got hammered and laid the night before, as long as you showed up to play Saturday.

Macho bullshit killed his grid career at SC, but his legacy and image will grow positively if he can have some career success in the real world. (He's not a NFL prospect, is he? Sort of reminds me of Matt Jones in his heyday at Arkansas)

How would Superior sum up Garcia's legacy?

Matt Jones was one of the most athletic football players in the country. He had a 39.5-inch vertical leap and a 4.4 seconds or lower 40-yard dash. He rushed for more than 600 yards in his final season at Arkansas. Jones was also 6-foot-6.

Garcia is 6-foot-2, fat, uncoordinated and not particularly athletic. He rushed for 222 yards last season.

Aside from being thickly built white guys with varying hairstyles, what exactly makes you think Garcia is anything like Jones? This is the equivalent of when people said David Garrard and Byron Leftwich were similar quarterbacks.

Similar in being highly productive oftentimes under center in college but for some reason or another not able to perform in the manner required to play quarterback in the NFL.
