OK, aside from the ability to strike multiple targets hundreds of miles away through its air wing — now mostly, if not all, F/A-18 Super Hornets — the carriers also show the flag and bring a major presence to places where it's needed. Like the tsunami that hit a couple of years ago.
First U.S. presence there? A carrier. Why? Because it's air wing also has a complement of helicopters, capable of search/rescue operations, delivering needed medicine, fuel and food to remote and stricken areas and bringing doctors and nurses where they're needed or bringing them aboard ship to any one of the carrier's five hospitals.
A carrier can treat and sustain hundreds of thousands of people not manning its decks at any one time. As far back as the 30s, when Seattle was hit with a power outage, they hooked up the city's power system to a carrier's boiler system and generator and ran the city's power system off that until it could be fixed. They can do that today with a nuclear-powered carrier for an even longer period of time.
When some asshole with a hand grenade starts shit somewhere in the world, the first response is, "where are the carriers?" because they can deliver a punch, or a veiled threat, quicker than just about anything else the U.S. has in its arsenal. Not everybody loves us and not everybody will. Try as we might, there are gonna be assholes who will want to start shit. The carrier puts an end to that and can be used in humanitarian purposes rather quickly and efficiently, maybe more than anything else the nation can offer.
Hate to see the Enterprise go into mothballs. I had an uncle who served with the Marine detachment aboard CV-6 during World War II.
We need 11 because nobody else can sustain a fleet of more than one or two, and those flattops can do a lot of good, be it to help a disaster-stricken area or to drop a reminder on some douchebag to quit fucking around. Besides, there's a lot of ocean out there and a lot of places our other armed services/forces can't reach as quickly with that much stuff.
