From the Missouri Press Association Web site:

Sun News has an immediate full-time opening for a sports editor for a group of six weekly newspapers in the Kansas City, Mo., area.

Responsibilities include managing a staff of four writers based in Gladstone, Mo., who cover a mix of high school and local college athletics; organizing the work flow of the sports desk, including weekly and long-term story planning for each paper’s print and online editions; editing sports content; serving as the primary sports page designer; generating sports content (game coverage, features, photos) as needed; and collaborating with the news and photo departments to ensure a cohesive product across sections. Some evening and weekend work is required.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication, organization and leadership skills. This position requires a highly motivated, energetic, detail-oriented team player familiar with AP Style and with experience using Adobe InDesign for newspaper design. Excellent news judgment, strong design skills and the ability to work well under deadline pressure are a must. This person must have strong interpersonal skills and be willing to work closely with other staff members in a collaborative newsroom environment. The ideal candidate will have three to five years of newsroom experience with sports. Knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop is a plus. A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field is preferred.

Sun News is a growing group of highly regarded community newspapers published in greater Kansas City. Its Northland division based in Gladstone, Mo., operates six weekly community newspapers with a combined circulation of more than 75,000 newspapers. All of these publications are intensely community-focused in their content. The goal of Sun News is to be the primary source of local news within the individual communities its publications serve. Nearly all content is locally generated, and wire services are used at a minimum. Sun News’ Northland newspapers won 78 Missouri Press Association awards in 2007 as well as 11 national awards from Suburban Newspapers of America.

Sun News publishes 19 weekly community newspapers in the Kansas City area with combined circulations of more than 220,000, as well as numerous specialty publications. Sun News is a division of NPG Newspapers Inc., a family-owned company based in St. Joseph, Mo.
