Sun Media announces layoffs, newspaper closures

    I'm only mildly surprised Sun Media had 360 jobs left to shed. Another sad day in the history of a chain that was never great to begin with, although many of its papers and their former chains (like Southam) are truly historic.

    Getting out of that chain was one of the best moves I ever made. Was chatting with a former Meadow Lake staffer today and the point was made that it might be good that some of these chain papers close - but only if independent publishers spring up to replace them.

    You can still make a buck in the newspaper business. You just can't make two bucks.
