Style question -- Hawaii or Hawai'i?

  4. Argument reminds me of an old joke. Husband and wife on vacation in Hawaii are arguing over the pronunciation.

    Wife: "It's Ha-vah-ee."

    Husband: "No, it's Ha-wah-ee."

    They ask a nearby local, who answers: "It's Ha-vah-ee."

    Wife: (to husband) "See, I told you." (to nearby local) "Thank you."

    Local: "You're velcome."

    It's something you see some SID offices do a lot this time of year, which should tell you that it's wrong.

    The official spelling is Hawai'i, but as has been noted, AP style is Hawaii. We spell it the AP style way out here, even in the name of our paper, West Hawaii Today.
