OK, this is really narrow, but it's bugging the hell out of me, and I saw it again today in an AP story and a headline.

If you're a bad guy or a boxer or an MMA fighter, you don't "whoop" anybody, for god's sake.

    You "whup" them.

This "whoop" business is showing up all over the place, and driving me crazy.

After you're done, you might whoop it up.

But while you're kicking the shit out of somebody, you're whupping them.

outside of a direct quote, I have no use for either.

The word is "whipped." Whoop (or whup) is just a bastardized slag version of that.

I would never use the word y'all in copy, either.
  7. Bingo. There's no place in your copy for either "whooped" or "whupped." For Christ's sake, we're journalists, not rappers.

I don't think this is anything I'll ever have to worry about.

Hence the first five words of my post: "outside of a direct quote."
