Stupid Grammar Question for the Editors

    You've completely lost me one this done bit. Something can be done without anyone knowing. I don't see the problem. Sure, you could say she made the decision without anyone knowing or whatever, but there are uses of the word done that don't have anything to do with steak or sweaters.

    Yeah. For example, dirty deeds are done. Dirt cheap.

    "Done" sounds very hickish when used to mean something is finished.

    I see it in small-town papers a lot and it's annoying.

    "When the sheriff was done talking ..." Hickish.

    The cooking line was said tongue in cheek.

    A steak is done. You walk through a doorway. Work is finished.

    My favorite, though: You raise corn. You rear children.
