Isn't our FDA approval process way more onerous than the process in other developed countries, though?

Hell, Matthew McConaughey just won an Academy Award by riding that premise.

For non-drugs, the substance is presumed to be safe unless deemed otherwise. The FDA pharmaceutical approval process is stringent, but it has been weakened. It is still the envy of the world, and I am thankful that it is as onerous as it is.

However, the industry has spent millions in an attempt to co-opt the FDA drug approval process using industry-funded studies to ram through approval on lucrative drugs. The newest painkiller than is 10 times more powerful than oxy was recently approved over the recommendation of the scientist that it not be approved. It's the same story as in any industry. There must be constant vigilance and parity to keep the regulators where they are not subservient to the industry they are supposed to regulate.
