Helping out a friend during the "Crazy time" for the sports schedule.

Need to write 16 inches on a basketball game tonight. I feel embarrassed for asking but about how many words is that?

Not a troll -- I'm a broadcasting guy just axin'.

    Thanks!

Multiply by 34 and you'll be pretty close.

that's fairly accurate (I usually figure 35), but it all depends on type size, column width, correct?

    Ex,

I've come to find out that the number varies from paper to paper.

I usually go by 35 myself, so that would be about 560 words. But some papers are so tight, that 16 inches could be less than 500.

I'd recommend that when you call into the paper before the game that you ask the night ed or whoever's working your story. They should be able to give you some guidance.

I've heard anything from 30-36 words per inch, and I've always gone with 200 characters = inch. But that's the ballpark.

Actually, it was the old Texas Instruments mini-computers "back in the day" with those shoddy, East German surplus modems. Much easier now.

Write. E-mail. Be done with it.

    Thanks! Multiply by 34...got it.

Get your friend to email you a 16-inch story. Copy and paste it into word. Do a word count. Voila.

In my shop one inch = 182 characters, spaces included. So I just divide my total characters by 182.

Which serves to point out that everybody figures it differently.

Funny on a journalism threat that involves math, no one did the math.

    34 x 16 = 544

I figured he could take the info (multiply by 34) and do it himself. Didn't realize we had to hold hands.
