Strike a pose: Charles Woodson named AP NFL Defensive POY

Your stats on times thrown to actually make the case better for Woodson. Quarterbacks shied away from him more than Revis, yet he still made more big plays.

So they threw at him less, but still produced more when they threw at him and you think that actually works in Woodson's favor?

Woodson made more big plays because the Packers allowed him to play like a free safety on occasion. The role he was put in allowed it. And the difference was still only three interceptions. Not enough to overcome the impact of a dominant shutdown corner.

If you want to make the case that Revis is a shutdown corner and that helps the entire defense schematically, then you have to afford the same leverage to Woodson, since he was avoided even more.

Also, 76 passes thrown at and nine interceptions. That's an interception one out of every 8.4 times the ball was thrown at him. Revis had 6 picks in 111 times thrown at. That's an interception one out of 18.5 times the ball was thrown at him. Plus Woodson made more tackles (74-54), had four forced fumbles and two sacks. Revis didn't force a fumble or record a sack.

There's no doubt Revis is in the discussion and is damn good. Woodson made more plays and was just as valuable as a cover corner.

But in the process, Woodson gave up more yards, was more likely to give up a reception and gave up more touchdowns.

Also, Revis broke the unofficial NFL record, with 31 pass deflections. 21 of those (that number alone would've lead the league) came on 3rd down, so he basically made a team punt 21 times this season.

Wrong. Given that Revis gave up fewer yards and fewer touchdowns, Woodson was not as effective as a cover corner.

Also, Woodson was not put in man-to-man coverage nearly as much because the Packers play a lot of zone and often lined Woodson up as a safety. Your posts are an excellent illustration of how looking only at statistics leads to uninformed and incorrect evaluations. That's twice you've helped me out by illustrating a point of mine today. Many thanks. :)

If you play in New York and you win an award, the player might be deserving.

If you play in Green Bay and you win an award, beating a player from New York, you were definitely deserving.

Bullshit. Woodson got plenty of help from the media hype machine.

Woodson or Revis would be deserving winners. It's just a little unfortunate Woodson got it two days after a game where his defense allowed 45 points and 5 TD passes.

That's a poor excuse, considering the CB position isn't a glorified position in the first place and Charles Woodson is the more widely known of the two.

Some people have no idea that Revis is a two time pro bowler.

So the guy who plays in the nation's biggest market was a victim of the guy in the nation's smallest NFL market getting hype from the "media hype machine?"

I'm guessing the 50 voters were well aware of Revis' Pro Bowls.
