The lip synch was done by the The Sorels, who opened for Ellen in the movie's final scene and also lip-synched the totally awesome a capella song "Countdown to Love."

I had a teacher in sixth grade who had a couple of friends in Beaver Brown (back when they were a R.I. bar band) he brought to class one day. I'm not sure if (IIRC) Spiro the guitarist and Frank the keyboard player (who demonstrated an early synthesizer for us) were still in the band by the time they hit it big.
BB played my high school's Christmas dance my junior year ('78). It was considered a major coup (though it didn't quite match the Providence prep school that landed Aerosmith for a prom a few years before).
BTW, SOF was not Diane Lane's first trip to the rock'n'roll rodeo. When I was in college, it seemed like CBS ran "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains" every other Friday night (also featuring the Tubes).
