I know this is very vague, but my girlfriend's mother is having pop-up problems on a laptop she got from work. I am not there and have no idea on model, etc., but apparently the problem is bad that they can't do anything on it right now.

    Suggestions??

Download ad-aware and Spybot from www.download.com. After you download them, make sure you check for updates (it will most likely prompt you to do so when you open them) and then let them run. Should kill any spyware on there that can cause popups.
After that, switch her browser to the latest version of firefox. It does a pretty good job (though not 100% perfect) of blocking popups that come when you navigate to a site.

TELL HER TO QUIT SURFING PORN SITES!

Really, amraeder's advise is solid. Firefox is the bomb.

    Agree. Firefox is the shiznit.

I still get an occasional pop-up, especially when I'm taking a survey or looking at music lyrics. But it's amazing how many pop-ups get chomped.

Is there such a thing as a completely 100 percent foolproof anti-spyware program? I want something that nobody is ever going to find a way around. Is there such a thing?

Sorry to Firefox-jack this thing, but I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem: I got the latest Firefox update a few weeks ago (2.0.0.9), and all of a sudden, it started taking around a minute to get through a log-in to any Web site. So, I'd enter a username and password, hit enter, and then ... nothing, for a minute.

I do have a fairly old machine, but I've downloaded the latest IE (yech), and it works fine. Other than being IE, that is.

I haven't had that problem, DS.

For the record, version 9 of the Opera browser (free) is also excellent, and seems to be a good bit faster than Firefox.

That's just about the only browser I haven't tried. Maybe I will.

ZoneAlarm works pretty well... too much so at times
