Saw him at the press briefing on Sportscenter and noticed he's out of the wheelchair now? He appeared to be standing. Anyone know how he's been progressing in recent years?

He's been walking with braces and canes for a long time.

Don't really recall him in a wheelchair except for the first couple years after the shooting.

Steve is one of the great guys around baseball. Not an ounce of bitterness about him, always has something interesting to say and he's sharp as a tack. He's an excellent umpire supervisor, too.

Well, you haven't seen him much on the news since the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

And, Cran, you're 100 percent right. The guy had an amazing faith that seemed to pull him through everything. If that happened to me, I wouldn't be so forgiving.

Palermo should be in the Hall of Fame. Aside from the facts concerning the bravery trying to stop a crime (and that should be a point in his favor), he was widely regarded as the best umpire of his time. He has also done studies for baseball about speeding up the game.
