However, during that absence, Fortune can report, Jobs also took an unpublicized flight to Switzerland to undergo an unusual radiological treatment at the University of Basel for neuroendocrine cancer, according to Jerry York, the Apple (AAPL) director who died in March 2010.

Yesterday, Apple announced the third known absence by Jobs for medical reasons over the last 7 years. York told me about the treatment, which was not available in the U.S., in the context of our discussions about Jobs, his health and Apple’s future. Under our agreement at the time, York wanted the facts of Jobs’s treatment in Switzerland to remain out of the news. He didn’t say whether the board knew of it. (With York’s death, the off-the-record agreement is no longer in place.)

Another tech CEO with health issues:

Larry Page, Google’s chief executive, was absent from Google’s quarterly earnings conference call Thursday, just as he has been a no-show at Google’s other public events for a month.

Google said he continues to run the company but won’t say much more than that, which has left people wondering what exactly is wrong with Mr. Page and whether shareholders should worry about the chief executive’s long-term health. “It’s a risk,” said Colin W. Gillis, a technology analyst at BGC Financial.

Mr. Page has lost his voice.

Three people who have been briefed on Mr. Page’s condition but were not authorized to discuss it said it is not a serious health issue. He has chronically delicate vocal cords, they said, and has been advised by his doctors to avoid talking in order to recuperate. He also spent some of this time vacationing in Bora Bora, these people said.

Google’s official response Thursday came from Nikesh Arora, the company’s chief business officer, on the earnings call.

“Larry has lost his voice, and we said that means he cannot do any public speaking engagements at the time, including today’s earnings call,” Mr. Arora said. “But he’s here and continues to run the company and is involved in any strategic decisions we’re making.”

Doctors said there is a range of reasons that someone could lose his voice, but only a few that would leave someone unable to talk for this long. At the end of June, Google said Mr. Page would not be speaking at events for at least a month.

One possible reason: polyps on the vocal cords. Polyps are generally benign, but healing requires that patients avoid talking, particularly public speaking that requires projecting the voice. Patients with this condition also generally see a speech pathologist to do exercises to strengthen the voice.

Vocal cord paralysis, such as laryngeal nerve palsy, is another potential cause. Viral infections like laryngitis or more serious problems like throat surgery or radiation therapy are less likely, doctors said, because they generally do not require patients to refrain from speaking for such an extended period.

Mr. Page’s voice has often sounded weak in public appearances, and he pauses often to drink water or swallow.

Curious that he would lose his voice just as he might possibly be asked about ex-girlfriend Marissa Mayer -- their relationship has been a very touchy subject in tech circles -- and why she was being pushed out of Google's inner circle just as Page was re-taking the reins.
