Bartman: "I humbly receive the ring not only as a symbol of one of the most historic achievements in sports, but as an important reminder for how we should treat each other in today’s society. My hope is that we all can learn from my experience to view sports as entertainment and prevent harsh scapegoating, and to challenge the media and opportunistic profiteers to conduct business ethically by respecting personal privacy rights and not exploit any individual to advance their own self-interest or economic gain."

You know, if fans of one of the sets of laundry I root for turned on/treated me the way Cubs fans treated Bartman ... even if only for a time ... I'd root against that team with every fiber of my being from now until eternity. Every time that team lost, I'd laugh my ass off, thinking of all those fuckers being miserable.

Look, I think most Cubs fans are total idiots. But he was not mistreated. He was booed for like two minutes. The rest of it is stupid bullshit perpetuated by said idiots who want to close the loop and write their narrative, with them as the redeemed hero.

I don't think you realize how many people get World Series rings.

Gotta disagree with you there. Cubs fans were throwing stuff at him, both in his seat and on the way out, and he had to be escorted out of the game with security personnel. Even if you ignore everything that happened after he left that stadium ... he was mistreated.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. In the heat of the moment. But the last 14 years, starting with the morning hangover, has been driven by fan opportunism and self-mythologizing, not contrition.

Sure. But in such matters, I have a tendency to judge people by their worst rather than their best. It's all fine and dandy to tell me that so-and-so's a great guy when he's in a good mood. What's he like when he's in a bad mood?

You're right, you're right. They acted deplorably that night.

And now they want him to be their cute little pet.

I'm still left pondering why Cubs fans suck now ...

I suspect Bartman has changed his appearance somewhat in 13 years, and if he's smart, never wears a clothing combo similar to his World Series getup, so I doubt he is regularly pummeled by fans walking down the street.

The gesture by the Cubs to give him a ring was ok. It's not like giving him a ring takes one away from somebody else.

His response was ok, although way way way too long.

I expect at some point he'll "write" a book. That's ok, although almost certainly I'll never buy it.

    That's it. Move on.
