He's always struck me as a very clean cut guy who would obey all the rules.

I'd put two year's salary up that not only was Nolan Ryan using in his Rangers' days, but also that he was the player that started that club (and outside players he was close to) down the steroids path.
His final three seasons scream "user."

I hadn't heard a lot of those. How many are true?

Don't know how many of those are true but amphetamine use was rampant in the 60s and 70s.

I have no doubt about that. But I'd never heard of Maris being specifically accused of steroids.

And there was not a single rule in baseball prohibiting any of it.

(ps, if you want a more detailed description of experimental PEDs in the 60s/70s, find the interviews with Tom House, former pitcher who later became Nolan Ryan's personal pitching coach.)

    Read those.

Were they legal at the time? Because I'm pretty sure MLB has always had a rule against illegal substances for performance reasons.

You'd have to define 'illegal.' Plenty of those things were obtainable legally.

Don Zimmer.LMAO. Had he been on steroids, he'd kicked Pedro's ass.

I believe the reference was to Mantle, not Maris.
Don't know about Mickey and roids but there is no doubt he wouldn't have been able to play hungover without uppers.
