    There's a pool in Fall River, Mass. that needs purification right now. {cross-thread}

    Utter nonsense. If we received a suitable rate of return on the annual investment American taxpayers already make in the educational system, we'd be producing a nation of rocket scientists instead of people dumb enough to fall for the type of class-warfare tripe so often found here.

    Just look at the DC public schools, which spend more per pupil (at least they used to) than any other locality in the country and still lag significantly in terms of academic achievement.

    But what the heck? Why cut spending when we can just keep borrowing money from our friends in China?

    Straight from the Koch Bros. Office of Dismantling Public Education (one of their main priorities).

    My mother, of course, blamed it all on the idiot Governor.
    But mom, I asked, if things are at an impasse don't you think both sides have a burden of fault to share?
    "No. It's that idiot Democratic Governor who just wants to spend. You can't spend if there's no money..."
    **sigh**

    Hey Strawman -- uh, I mean Starman -- I'm married to a public school teacher and there are more than a few people like her who believe it would be in the best interests of students if America's public education system got a good dismantling.

    But let's just keep throwing money at education and the economy and all of our other problems. It's working so well right now.

    Yeah, instead let's throw all that money at the billionaires.

    Thanks for promptly living up to your new nickname, Strawman.

    So you're saying that the average American billionaire, who already foots a disproportionate share of our country's annual tax bill, needs to pay even more so our government can spend even more (on programs such as public education) than we currently do?

    Based on his speech the other day, it seems like Obama agrees with you. Color me shocked that the economy hasn't experienced a sustained period of explosive growth with income redistribution as our government's main objective. :eek:

    Well, the American billionaire could cut his tax bill by not making as much money. Rather, they can provide more jobs, and pay their workers more. Less salary for a billionaire, lower taxes.

    And the economy had a long period of sustained growth from the mid-1940s through the early 1970s. Taxes for the wealthy were a lot higher then.

    Heck, in the late 90s, the wealthiest had a tax rate of 39.6 percent. Didn't seem to stop the economy then, even though the middle class didn't quite reap the rewards.

    Meanwhile, in the land south of 10,000 Lakes (that would be called Iowa), they got their budget hoorah passed hours before midnight. Both sides didn't get all what they wanted, with that said we're talking about fireworks tonight and not a shutdown.
