    Re: Starch Madness

By the way, the fact that "Chocolate Frosted Sugar-Bombs" were left off the list is a disgrace. It's a disgrace to this tournament, it's a disgrace to this sport and it's a disgrace to all the fans that will come and watch mediocre cereals battle when the supreme tooth-rotter sits on the outside for yet another year. It was good enough for Calvin, why can't it be good enough for you.

I'll do the Moddy thing: If one person here hasn't eaten Smart Start, and eats a box, and doesn't like it, I'll send them money for another box of their favorite cereal.

Just remember: St. Joseph's came out of nowhere a few years ago to go 30-1 during the regular season then made it to the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 (can't remember which). Smart Start: Know it. Milk it. Chew it!

    Re: Starch Madness

Our halftime report is brought to you by Chevy. This is our country.

As the first half draws to a close, we offer kudos to our selection committee, whose seedings have proven astute as few major upsets are brewing.

In La Jolla, No. 11 Cinnamon Life holds a 4-point lead over No. 6 Grape Nuts, which is still struggling after an early exit in the conference tournament. Also in the Midnight Snack Sectional, No. 1 Frosted Flakes shot 100 percent from the field in taking a massive lead over Waffle Crisp and coach Tiger plans to rest his starters throughout the second half. No. 2 Golden Grahams and No. 3 Wheaties are also cruising.

In Peterborough, No. 1 Lucky Charms is in no danger, but third-seeded Cap'n Crunch needed a buzzer-beater from their captain to take a halftime lead over No. 14 Kix. No. 11 Raisin Bran Crunch took an early lead and holds a 1-point edge over No. 6 Honeycomb at the half. No. 4 Cookie Crisp is in control over No. 13 Shredded Wheat.

In Battle Creek, No. 8 Corn Pops called a bank-shot 3-pointer from the halfcourt line as time expired to enter the locker room with the lead over No. 9 Nut 'n' Honey. Its archrival, No. 4 Honey Bunches of Oats, is steamrolling Oatmeal Crisp. No. 2 Raisin Bran is using its height advantage to overpower the 15th-seeded Flutie Flakes.

And in Golden Valley, No. 5 Cocoa Puffs is playing with a ferocity unseen all season after complaining about its low seed. The Cuckoos are really sticking it to No. 12 Fiber One, which experienced an unfortunate bout of constipation before the tournament and looks awkward out there. No. 9 Alpha Bits has a healthy lead on Bran Flakes.

Now, back to Jim and Billy in the booth for the second half ...

    Re: Starch Madness

With 5 minutes left to play (and 5 votes left to tally), we are coming down to the wire.

The Golden Valley regional is wrapped up -- only No. 9 Alpha Bits pulled off the upset, of No. 8 Bran Flakes. Frankly, folks, it wasn't close.

In Battle Creek, No. 5 Special K and No. 6 Oh's are in the fights of their lives. Oh's is down by 1 to No. 11 Boo Berry, while No. 12 Marshmallow Alpha Bits is still in it, down by 3.

In Peterborough, No. 8 Cocoa Krisipies has this one in hand but it's not over yet. No. 6 Honeycomb is shooting free throws, up by 5 late. The 7-10 game between Total and Smacks is tied up.

In La Jolla, No. 1 Frosted Flakes has a chance for an unprecedented first-round shutout. No. 9 Golden Crisp is up by 3, close to pulling this one out.

Back for the finish after this word from our sponsors ...
