When I came aboard almost two years ago, we were at 16, plus an online SE, which is a separate department. Three left, one was replaced. So 14, plus the online SE now.

Staff still seems large compared to papers with comparable circulation figures. That's both something to brag about and to be concerned about. You are happy that you have a big staff, but you also wait for the other shoe to drop.

Actually, our staff has stayed the same over the past decade or so. Our newsroom hasn't had any layoffs (knock on wood) and things seem to have turned the corner ad wise for us.

Seven-day 20,000 AM. Sports editor, two full-timers, one almost full-timer who doesn't paginate. No agate clerk, occasional stringer help.

Not too bad when everyone's humming along full speed, but when anyone gets sick, takes vacation or whatever, then you really feel the pinch.
