    Circulation: 45,675 (Daily); 54,400 (Sundays)
Staff: Sports Editor, three full-time writers, two part-time agate clerks, one intern
46 High Schools in coverage area
1 Division I-A school in city; 1 BCS school 45 minutes away

As of now, the sports staff is having to paginate pages. Universal Desk was tried, but failed miserably. Kind of pathetic for a paper of this size to have only four full-timers.

Wow. That is pathetic. We're roughly the same size. SE, 8 FTs, 1 PT. About 14 high schools.

    45K.

Sections average 7-11 pages per night.

    1 SE.

3 full-time writers (One designated as ASE). All do layout on a regular basis.

1 desker. (One guy from a 'sister paper' helps out a couple nights a week.)

In the last 18 months, 2 full-time staffers, 2 part-time writers, and a full-time desker have been laid off. (Circulation has also gone down about 10K).

Photo department has been cut from 4 full-timers to 2 full-timers and one PT shooter.

Stringer budget has also been cut 60%. Travel budget has been set at zero-base: any trips outside a 15-mile radius must be approved in advance by the publisher.

Management has issued an ironclad "no overtime, ever" edict.

    Guess who.

35,000. City has three high schools and a junior college. Area has more than 100 high schools and a host of small colleges.

SE who covers a D-I university that doesn't have football, and other stuff.

ASE (me) who covers local/state jucos, prep soccer and other assignments.

Writer who covers two major universities and other other assignments.

Two writers who handle primarily prep assignments.

The SE, ASE and one writer do 90 percent of the pagination and copy editing. Have about five part-timers, including one who handles the agate page.

    1 SE (who also writes)
    4 FT writers (1 D1 school/outdoors, 1 preps, 1 two D1 schools/columnist, 1 NFL beat/GA)
    1 Copy editor/night editor
    1 PT agate/writer

We use universal desk with two guys who typically design our pages.

It would be nice to have one more person, though, which we had in the good old days.

  12. Sunday: 45,000 circulation

Sports Editor: Writes, does desk, copy edits, etc.

Six full-time writers, about two of whom do desk (including me) pretty regularly. We also have a part-timer who works 40 hours but mostly does layout.

We have an outdoors editor but never see him, so he doesn't count. We also have a 20-hour a week high schooler who does agate, answers phones, etc.

We cover 78 high schools (including privates), about 65 of which have football. We also cover a Division III university, an NAIA school, a prominent JUCO, staff every Cowboys home game and occasionally do other pro/college stuff.

A family-owned paper, so you can imagine what the pay is like. Like most, we're vastly understaffed.
