Oh my word. This is certainly an entry level position.
And, I'm not sure you could live in the area for the salary they're going to offer.

You can't -- unless you live in the Newhall barrio.

I know this paper pretty well; having worked with one of their former SE's and having filed many a story from their offices smack dab in the middle of the Valencia Auto Center. The HS football is good, real good and there's the Champions Tour event there every March. The HS sports are pretty decent overall and there's College of the Canyons, which is the ONLY college you'll cover.

But RPM and Editude are correct -- you are a journalistic cypher there. And with the average home price there somewhere in the half-million to 600k neighborhood and the penuriousness of Morris signing your check, you'd be an economic one as well.

It's not a bad place for a recent college grad who wants to get into the business. The high school sports in the SCV are phenomenal, especially football, baseball and softball. College of the Canyons is usually among the top 10 in JC football. Kyle Boller of the Baltimore Ravens played at Hart High and current Cal QB Nate Longshore went to Canyon. Olympic gold medalists Anthony Ervin (swimming) and Crystl Bustos also are from the area. It can lead to bigger and better opportunities if you play your cards right.

Probably not a good place, either.

If history serves, this position will stay open until there is 1 sportswriter left on staff and someone in management will discover, "Gee, we can't cover Hart High football. Wonder if that will affect the 7,000 subscriptions we are desperately clinging on to?" If there are candidates for this spot, and you are one of them, be prepared for a painfully long wait. Or at best, a staff revolt and a desperation to hire the candidate willing to work for the least amount of money.

This newspaper, unfortunately, has become a shopper.
