The La Grande Observer is seeking a motivated, hardworking, experienced and enthusiastic self-starter to join our newsroom and aide in the sports coverage of the nine high schools in Union and Wallowa counties, as well as Eastern Oregon University.

The qualified candidate will be able to write clear and concise stories on deadline and informative features, develop sources and break news on their beat, take crisp and clear photographs, and have the ability to paginate and proofread pages.

The candidate must be able and willing to work late nights and weekends and work well with the sports editor and the rest of the newsroom. The use of social media (Facebook and Twitter) is required and is a core part of our coverage, as is continuing the process of maintaining and improving our website coverage.

Qualifications include: Bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent; minimum of one year of experience in the field with a print or online publication; and knowledge of AP style, photography, video/multimedia, social media and InDesign.

The ability to be flexible, and help with news, page building and proofreading as called upon, is also needed.

La Grande is located in Northeast Oregon at the base of the Blue Mountains, and is home to abundant outdoor recreation. It is also a farming and ranching center. The La Grande Observer is part of Western Communications. Advancement and management opportunities within a topflight newspaper organization are very realistic for employees with a proven track record. Solid benefit package includes competitive pay, life insurance, flex-spending account, paid vacations and mileage reimbursement.

Qualified applicants should email cover letter, resume, 3-5 clips, and professional references to Sports Editor Ronald Bond, at rbond@lagrandeobserver.com.
