The Rapid City Journal (30,000 circ. daily) is looking for a talented, experienced sports copy editor/reporter to play a large role in the sports department.

The sports copy editor’s main duties include working with the sports editor and assistant sports editor to help plan and assign content, and oversee production for our print and online editions. Therefore, the top candidates will be adept at coordinating centerpieces and responding to breaking news, but can also edit stories and make smart local news decisions. The copy editor will need good news judgment, great planning and organizational skills, and should be a solid line editor. Pagination experience is required.

In addition, the copy editor will oversee the Journal’s weekly Outdoors & Recreation section, planning great stories and photos that engage and inform our readers.

Our next copy editor will also have the opportunity to write occasional features, enterprise projects or game coverage.

If you have a great attitude and work ethic, and want to join the award-winning staff of the second-largest paper in the state, apply at www.rapidcityjournal.com/workhere.

I once interviewed here, turned down a job for no reason other than I decided I was more comfortable staying where I was at. It was actually one of the most difficult choices I've ever had to make in my life.

Rapid City is a good place and is the centerpiece of an amazing area. If you're the outdoorsy type or just like having fun, you'll really enjoy the Black Hills. Within an hour, you have Mount Rushmore, Deadwood and the casinos, Sturgis and the motorcycle rally, decent skiing, the infamous Wall Drug store and just overall great outdoors fun. Rapid City has one NAIA college and Spearfish, 40 minutes up the road, has another. They both do OK right now (Black Hills State in Spearfish goes to a couple national tournaments a year) and both are seriously looking into D-II moves.

As for the paper, they do a good job. They have a younger sports editor who is a great guy and a good staff around him that have done a lot to improve the section the past couple years. As with most papers though, they could use a touch more flair on their pages, which is why a good copy editor could have a blast there. Interestly, they have to compete against the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader for awards. The SFAL has a huge sports staff, many of whom should be writing for much larger papers. This makes awards a little tough to come by for the Journal, but they always have real quality copy.

PM me if you want to know more.

I've done some stringing for them and the deskers I worked with seemed like good people.

Subject line is a bit misleading.
