The New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung is looking for an all-star to join its sports staff. The Herald-Zeitung, a six-day daily in New Braunfels, Texas, has won 51 Texas APME awards during the last two years — including a record 28 in 2012.

The sports reporter’s main focus will be high school coverage, but you also will get to write features on local athletes playing at Division I programs as well as cover Texas State University and University of Texas-San Antonio football and basketball games. Throw in San Antonio Spurs games and other events — professional cycling, world championship watersports and professional tennis, to name a few — and you have the makings of a fun, challenging and fulfilling job.

    The ideal candidate will have:
    • Extensive knowledge of AP style and accurate reporting skills.
    • Experience in working on a tight deadline.
    • The ability to produce good, clean copy.
    • Exceptional organizational skills.
    • Working knowledge of all sports.
    • Experience working in a community newspaper environment.
    • Great customer relations skills.
    • Demonstrable grasp of digital and print reporting tools.
    • A good handle on social media and its role in expanding the newspaper’s reach.

Photography and pagination skills with Quark are a definite plus. Your portfolio should reflect enthusiasm, curiosity, excellent language skills and the ability to engage and develop sources. This position requires night and weekend work. Qualified candidates must have reliable transportation and be willing to work in a drug-free environment.

If you think you’re an all-star sports reporter, email your resume and five clips (PDFs preferred) to Managing Editor Shawn Lewis at slewis@herald-zeitung.com. Please no snail-mail submissions; after all, this is 2012. The Herald-Zeitung offers competitive wages and a wide array of benefits.
